265 (211A) Nursing Fundamentals (4) CSU
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Biology 20 or Anatomy 1 and Physiology 1*, Microbiology 1 or 20, Psychology 1, Psychology 41, Mathematics 115, English 101 .
Corequisite: Nursing 257A
Lecture, 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
The fundamentals course in the nursing sequence provides the student with the opportunity to learn the concepts and principles underlying basic nursing care. This course presents basic content on the profession of nursing: its characteristics, professional role, ethical/legal concepts, and nursing history. Content is focused on nurse-patient interaction, cultural and religious aspects, and age-related differences in basic physiological needs, safety and comfort measures, communication skills. The framework of the nursing process is introduced in the fundamentals of nursing. Concurrent clinical experience in local health care facilities provides the student with the opportunity to validate those theories and concepts presented in class; and the opportunity to develop beginning skills in patient/client care.

266 (211B) Medical-Surgical I (4) CSU

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of 265 (211A) and 257A.
Corequisite: Nursing 257B.
Lecture, 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
This course in the nursing sequence provides the student with the opportunity to learn the concepts and principles underlying the basic nursing care of patients with alterations in nutrition, comfort and coping skills, and with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary problems. Patient/client care focuses on the framework of the nursing process both in theoretical and clinical aspects of the student’s training. This course allows for students to develop the necessary fundamental skills in patient/client care and also to implement critical thinking skills in applicable situations.

267 (221) Medical Surgical II (4) CSU
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 266 (211B), and 257B.
Lecture, 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
This course in the nursing sequence provides the student with the opportunity to learn the concepts and principles of assessment and management of the perioperative patient/client. The nursing process is applied to alterations of renal and integumentary systems. Concurrent clinical experiences in local health care facilities provide the student with the opportunity to validate theories and concepts presented in class, and the opportunity to enhance beginning skills in patient/client care.

222 Women’s Health and Newborn Care (4) CSU
Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 221 and 242.
Lecture, 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
The course is designed to prepare the student to undertake his/her role in providing safe and effective care to women and the newborn. Emphasis is made on the physiological care including the emotional, psychological, cultural and legal aspects. Clinical experience in a variety of settings including: women’s medical-surgical and obstetrical units in acute hospitals, and other community agencies.

231 Medical Surgical Nursing III (4) CSU
Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 221 and 242.
Lecture, 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
This course in the nursing sequence is a continuation of the application of the nursing process with theoretical and clinical experience relating specifically to adult and senior persons with selective problems in the musculoskeletal, immune, endocrine, and respiratory systems. This course enables the student to assess and implement critical thinking skills in the patient/client care.

232 Child Health Nursing (4) CSU
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 222 and 231.
Lecture 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
This course utilizes the nursing process in the health care of children from infancy through adolescence with focus on basic human needs. This course is organized from one developmental stage to another with emphasis on the entire family. The student learns to provide family-centered care to the child with sensitivity to the parent’s role, the family’s cultural diversity and socioeconomic life style.

241 Medical-Surgical IV (7) CSU
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 222 and 231.
Lecture 6 hours; Laboratory, 24 hours.
This is the final course in the medical-surgical nursing sequence. Management concepts are integrated as the student moves into the professional leadership role. The student learns current principles and concepts while caring for patient/clients with alterations of health status affecting the cardiovascular, neurosensory, and audio visual functions, with emphasis on the gerontological client. Nursing care for an increased number of patients/clients are provided at a safe and competent professional entry level while validating learned concepts through concurrent clinical experiences at local health care facilities.

242 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (4) CSU

Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 266 (211B) and 276A (257B).
Lecture, 4 hours; Laboratory, 12 hours.
Theories of human behavior as a scientific base and the purposeful use of self are presented. Emphasis is placed on the application of the nursing process to persons with mild to severe psychosocial problems within the context of the family and the community. Concurrent clinical experience is provided in order to offer practical validation of theory.

243 Role Transition (1) CSU
Prerequisites: Satisfactory completion of Nursing 222 & 231.
Corequisite: Nursing 232 or 241.
Lecture, 2 hours.
This course offers the student the opportunity to explore the major factors involved in the transition from student role to that of registered nurse. The professional, social, personal and legal aspects of applied nursing process are discussed in order to acquaint the student with the goals and responsibilities of the registered nurse in a multiethnic society. Panel presentations, group discussions, role-playing, and lectures by guest speakers is the format in which this course is presented.

250 Orientation to Nursing (1) CSU
Lecture, 1 hour.
This course is designed to help the beginning student majoring in nursing to prepare for the nursing curriculum. A review of basic mathematics, how to study effectively and qualifying examinations for nursing program readiness are among the topics considered.

252 Mathematics of Drugs and Solutions (2) CSU
Lecture, 4 hours
This elective course involves the computation of drug dosages and the conversion of the 3 major systems (metric, apothecary, household) of measurement necessary for the administration of medications.

276 (257) The Nursing Process (3) CSU RPT1
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Biology 20 or Anatomy 1 and Physiology 1*, Microbiology 1 or 20, Chemistry 3 or 11, Acceptance into the Nursing program.
Lecture, 1.5 hours
The scientific method of problem solving is utilized in developing the Nursing Process. The student learns to take a nursing history and perform physical assessment skills. Baseline data related to patient/client health status is assessed and analyzed. Short-term and long term goals are written for the patient’s/client’s plan of care. Nursing interventions are implemented according to the students’ level in the nursing program. Goals are evaluated for effectiveness of nursing care. Health promotion to assist individuals attain an optimal level of functioning
is reached by learning to provide a safe and effective care environment, maintain the client’s physiological integrity, and teach principles of health maintenance.
* Has Chemistry prerequisite.

276A (257A) The Nursing Process (1.5) CSU
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Biology 20 or Anatomy 1 and Physiology 1*, Microbiology 1 or 20, Psychology 1, Psychology 41, Mathematics 115, English 101, Nursing 250.
Corequisite: Nursing 265 (211A).
Lecture, 1.5 hours
The scientific method of problem solving is utilized in developing the Nursing Process. The student learns to take a nursing history and perform physical assessment skills. Baseline data related to patient/client health status is assessed and analyzed. Short term and long term goals are written for the patient/client’s plan of care. Nursing interventions are implemented and manifested behavior are evaluated for effectiveness of nursing care.

276B (257B) Health Assessment B (1.5) CSU
Prerequisites: Nursing 257A and Nursing 211A.
Corequisite: Nursing 266 (211B).
PREREQUISITES FOR LVN’S: Satisfactory completion of Biology 20 or Anatomy 1 and Physiology 1*, Microbiology 1 or 20, Psychology 1, Psychology 41, Mathematics 115, English 101, Nursing 250. Current California VN license.
Lecture, 1.5 hours.
Beginning physical assessment tools/skills are utilized in developing a client’s health history. The student learns to conduct beginning physical assessment for each body system according to a standardized format.
* Has Chemistry prerequisite.

261 Nursing Process Review (1) CSU
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Biology 20 or Anatomy 1 and Physiology 1*, Microbiology 1 or 20, Psychology 1, Psychology 41, Mathematics 115, English 101, Nursing 250. Current California license.
Lecture, 1.5 hours.
This course provides the LVN, or transfer with current concepts and utilization of the Nursing Process. Nursing implementations for various intravenous therapies are presented. Beginning physical assessment skills for each body system are practiced.
* Has Chemistry prerequisite.

185 Directed Study-Nursing (1) RPT2 Grading is CREDIT/NO-CREDIT
285 Directed Study-Nursing (2) Grading is CREDIT/NO-CREDIT
385 Directed Study-Nursing (3)

Conference 1 hour per week per unit.
This course allows students the opportunity to pursue directed study in nursing on a contract basis under the direction of a supervising instructor. Grading is CREDIT/NO-CREDIT.

Credit Limit: A maximum of 6 units in Directed Study may be taken for credit.

931 Cooperative Education - Nursing(3) CSU RPT 3

Note: Requires 15 to 19 hours per week; paid employment related to the occupational major and enrollment in at least 7 units (which include Co-op Ed).
This course offers advanced supervised training in an employment area that will enhance the student’s educational goals on campus.

941 Cooperative Education – Nursing(4) CSU RPT 3
